Position Description

The Newborn Home Visiting Program (NHVP), in an effort to promote the Agency's Take Care New York goal of "Having a Healthy Baby", offers home visits to families with a new infant.  Home visitors focus on supporting and improving breastfeeding and safe sleep practices; provide education on Maternal and Infant health topics; conduct a home environmental assessments and makes referrals for health and social service support.  NHVP serves families in the DOHMH Health Action Center neighborhoods in South Bronx, North/Central Brooklyn, and East/Central Harlem, as well as, families residing in Department of Homeless Services (DHS) shelters.  These neighborhoods are burdened with some of the highest rates of infant mortality and other negative health outcomes among children in New York City.

The Lactation Consultant, under the direction of the Program Director will:

Duties and Responsibilities:

*         Provide breastfeeding support to clients referred by home visitors-support will be provided to clients through home visits and via telephone consultations


*         Develop and facilitate breastfeeding education presentations for home visitors to support and enhance knowledge base and skilled delivery of key messages;


*         Support home visitors in  preparation for CLC course and exam to obtain certification; and observe and assess home visitors' delivery of breastfeeding support and messaging to clients


*         Identify community resources and referral networks that clients can be referred to for supplementary breastfeeding support


*         Identify breastfeeding trainings opportunities (in-person, online self-directed, webinars) to meet the needs of the Program and ensure staff have access to the most current breastfeeding information


*         Support Program Director in developing a pathway to IBCLC certification for identified home visiting staff

Education and Experience Required:

 1.  Current certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Counselor(IBCLC)
 2.  At least one year of applied experience, preferably providing direct breastfeeding support to women
 3.  Experience facilitating workshops and/or leading group discussions

*PREFERRED SKILLS:
Community outreach experience; breastfeeding education experience, excellent written and oral communication skills. Bilingual fluent in Spanish or French preferred.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
A motor Vehicle Driver's license valid in the State of New York may be required for certain assignments.  If required, this license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
